Shilajit and Viagra: Evidence and Safety
Short answer: No. Shilajit does not work like Viagra, and calling it “natural Viagra” is misleading. Viagra is the brand name for sildenafil, a prescription medicine indicated for erectile dysfunction. Shilajit is a supplement. No published randomised, placebo-controlled trial has shown that shilajit treats erectile dysfunction or works like sildenafil. One small uncontrolled exploratory report exists, but it cannot establish efficacy or a dose.
The distinction is not cosmetic. Sildenafil has a defined drug mechanism, prescribing information, contraindications and controlled evidence for erections. Most shilajit studies used in sexual-health marketing measured hormones or semen parameters. A small 2025 report included men with mixed sexual-health symptoms, but it had no placebo group, no validated erectile-function score and no clearly reported milligram dose.
Shilajit vs Viagra at a glance
| Question | Viagra / sildenafil | Shilajit |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A prescription phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor used to treat erectile dysfunction. | A traditional substance sold as a supplement in resin and extract formats. |
| Evidence for erections | Supported by controlled trials, prescribing information and erectile-dysfunction guidelines. | No published randomised, placebo-controlled trial has shown that shilajit treats erectile dysfunction or established an effective dose. |
| How does it act? | It increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. It does not create desire on its own. | No Viagra-like erection mechanism or on-demand effect has been established in humans. |
| Timing | The label recommends about one hour before sexual activity and allows a window of 30 minutes to four hours. A high-fat meal can delay the start of effect. This is a dosing window, not a guaranteed onset time; patients should follow their own prescription. | There is no validated onset time for erections, libido or sexual performance. |
| Can it increase libido? | Sildenafil treats the erection response; MedlinePlus states that it does not increase sexual desire. | A human libido benefit has not been established. Testosterone results are not libido results. |
What Viagra actually does
Sildenafil helps increase blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. It does not automatically cause an erection, cure the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction or increase sexual desire.
The European Association of Urology recommends phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors as first-line therapy for erectile dysfunction when appropriate. That does not make sildenafil suitable for everyone: erectile dysfunction has vascular, hormonal, neurological, medication-related and psychological causes, and a proper assessment can identify issues that a supplement cannot diagnose.
What the shilajit studies actually measured
A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study tested a specific purified shilajit preparation in healthy men aged 45 to 55. After 90 days, the study reported higher total testosterone, free testosterone and DHEAS than placebo. That is a legitimate hormone result—but the study did not enroll men for erectile dysfunction or measure erections, libido, intercourse success or sexual satisfaction.
Another study enrolled men with oligospermia and reported changes in semen parameters after 90 days of a specific processed shilajit preparation. Only 28 participants completed treatment, and there was no placebo group. Sperm measures are not erection measures, and an uncontrolled before-and-after study cannot establish that shilajit caused the changes.
A 2025 exploratory report enrolled 20 men with mixed symptoms that included sexual debility, low libido, fatigue, oligospermia and erectile dysfunction. It was single-centre and open-label, had no placebo group, did not use a validated erectile-function score, and reported one or two capsules twice daily without giving a clear milligram amount. Participants were also advised to change diet and exercise, symptom improvement relied on patient reports and physician judgement, and several authors were affiliated with the capsule manufacturer. It cannot establish that shilajit caused the reported changes, define an ED dose, show a sildenafil-like effect or be applied to Essencraft resin.
Does higher testosterone automatically fix erectile dysfunction?
No. Testosterone and erectile function overlap in some men, but they are not interchangeable. Erectile dysfunction can involve blood vessels, nerves, medications, diabetes, cardiovascular risk, stress, relationships or several factors at once. A hormone result from healthy middle-aged men cannot be converted into a universal erection, libido or performance claim.
Can you take shilajit and Viagra together?
Do not self-stack them in an attempt to intensify an erection. We found no published human study that directly tested shilajit with sildenafil for safety or added benefit. The absence of a listed interaction is not proof that the combination is safe.
If you use sildenafil and want to add shilajit, have the prescriber or pharmacist review the exact product, your complete medication and supplement list, and your medical conditions. Bring the jar or a clear photograph of its label rather than asking about “shilajit” in the abstract.
Important sildenafil label restrictions include the following; this is not complete prescribing information:
- Sildenafil is contraindicated with nitrates, including medicines such as nitroglycerin, and with recreational nitrites or “poppers.”
- It is also contraindicated with guanylate cyclase stimulators such as riociguat.
- People for whom sexual activity is inadvisable because of cardiovascular status should not generally use sildenafil without medical assessment.
- Alpha-blockers and blood-pressure medicines require appropriate prescribing review because combined blood-pressure effects can occur.
- An erection lasting more than four hours, sudden vision loss or sudden hearing loss requires urgent medical attention.
Why “herbal Viagra” is a red flag
The US Food and Drug Administration maintains a long list of sexual-enhancement products found to contain hidden drug ingredients. A product marketed as natural can still be adulterated, and medicine-like promises are not proof of medicine-like quality.
Read what a laboratory report actually tested. A heavy-metal panel can report the named metals in the tested sample. It does not prove erectile-dysfunction effectiveness, compatibility with sildenafil or the absence of undeclared pharmaceuticals unless those questions were specifically tested.
Where Essencraft resin fits
Essencraft Pure Organic Himalayan Shilajit Resin - 60 Grams is a one-ingredient traditional resin. Its product page explains the preparation routine and sensory characteristics and links the Eurofins report for named Himalayan Shilajit Resin sample/lot RM0326007. That report is sample-specific; it is not evidence of erectile-dysfunction effectiveness or compatibility with sildenafil.
Follow the directions and warnings printed on the jar. Do not copy research doses from studies using other purified extracts or proprietary capsules.

Frequently asked questions
Is shilajit a natural Viagra?
No. Shilajit has not been shown to reproduce sildenafil’s mechanism, timing or clinical effect on erections.
Can shilajit replace prescribed sildenafil?
No evidence supports using shilajit as an equivalent replacement. Do not stop or alter a prescription based on supplement marketing.
Does the testosterone study prove a sexual benefit?
No. It measured hormone concentrations in healthy men aged 45 to 55. It did not measure erectile dysfunction, libido or sexual performance.
Is shilajit safe with sildenafil?
Combination safety has not been established in a controlled human study. Have the exact combination reviewed by the prescriber or pharmacist instead of self-stacking the products.
Does Viagra increase sex drive?
No. Sildenafil supports the erection response during sexual stimulation; it does not increase sexual desire.
