Shilajit and Cancer: What the Evidence Shows

Shilajit and Cancer

Short answer: shilajit has shown biological activity in cancer-cell experiments and limited animal research. It has not been shown to prevent, treat or cure cancer in people, improve survival, relieve cancer symptoms or make cancer treatment work better. No human clinical trial has established a cancer benefit or a cancer-specific dose.

That distinction matters. A result in cells or rats can justify more research, but it cannot be converted into treatment advice for a person with cancer.

What the evidence shows at a glance

Why cancer-cell research is not cancer treatment

In a cell experiment, researchers apply a measured concentration of a preparation directly to cancer cells in a dish. The cells do not digest it, metabolise it through a liver or interact with the rest of a human body.

An oral product has to pass through digestion and metabolism before any constituent reaches tissue. Researchers must then establish whether a relevant concentration can be reached safely, whether the effect survives in a living organism, whether it improves a meaningful outcome and whether it interacts with treatment.

Shilajit research has not completed those steps. The preparations used across studies also differ in source, extraction, composition and concentration. Results from one laboratory preparation cannot automatically be assigned to another preparation or to Essencraft’s finished resin.

What the shilajit and cancer studies actually found

Liver cancer cells

A 2016 study exposed Huh-7 liver cancer cells to a mineral-pitch preparation. Researchers reported changes in reactive oxygen species, apoptosis and cell proliferation. This was an in-vitro experiment: no people received shilajit and the study did not measure tumour response, symptoms or survival. Read the original study on PubMed.

Breast cancer cells

A 2020 study tested an Iranian “mummy” preparation on two breast cancer cell lines. It reported effects on cell proliferation, apoptosis and genes associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Again, the work was performed on cultured cells, not patients, and it did not test Essencraft resin. Read the original breast-cell study.

Bladder cancer cells

A 2021 study found time- and concentration-dependent effects on two bladder cancer cell lines, including cell-cycle changes and apoptosis. The researchers also tested normal urothelial cells, but this remained a laboratory experiment. Read the original bladder-cell study.

A 2026 study then tested Mumio in three-dimensional bladder-cell spheroids. Concentrations used in the earlier 2D model were less potent in the 3D conditions. That does not erase the laboratory signal; it shows how an effect can change as a model becomes more complex. It still was not a human trial. Read the 2026 study.

An animal cancer model

A 2022 experiment gave shilajit alongside a chemotherapy combination in a rat osteosarcoma model. It examined liver and kidney blood markers and tissue changes. An animal result cannot establish a human dose, rule out interactions or prove that shilajit improves cancer outcomes in patients. Read the original animal study.

The overall evidence

A 2026 systematic review found nine eligible preclinical studies and no eligible human clinical studies of shilajit as an anticancer intervention. It also identified major differences between preparations and methods. The accurate conclusion is simple: there are research signals worth investigating, but there is no clinical cancer claim to make. Read the evidence review.

Can shilajit prevent cancer?

No human evidence shows that taking shilajit prevents cancer or lowers the risk of recurrence.

Terms such as “antioxidant” and “anti-inflammatory” describe possible biological activity; they do not prove cancer prevention. Cancer biology and treatment are far more complicated than “more antioxidants equals less cancer.” The National Cancer Institute states that supplements and popular dietary approaches have not been proved to slow cancer, cure it or stop it returning. Can shilajit help during chemotherapy, radiation or immunotherapy?

No shilajit-specific human interaction evidence establishes compatibility with chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy or hormone therapy. The oncology team should assess the exact product against the exact treatment, medicines and clinical situation.

Before using it during chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy or around surgery, give the oncology team:

  • the complete product label and serving size;
  • the ingredient list;
  • the relevant product and testing information;
  • a list of every medicine and supplement being used; and
  • the proposed timing and frequency.

Ask one direct question: “Is there a reason this exact product could interfere with my treatment, surgery, blood tests, liver or kidney function?”

The National Cancer Institute explains that dietary supplements, herbs and other CAM products can change how anticancer drugs are absorbed, distributed, metabolised or excreted. Four claims the evidence does not support

  • “Shilajit fights cancer in the body.” Cell activity has not been translated into a demonstrated human treatment effect.
  • “Shilajit boosts the immune system to attack cancer.” No clinical trial has shown that outcome, and broad immune language is not treatment evidence.
  • “Shilajit reduces the side effects of cancer treatment.” The rat study does not establish symptom relief or organ protection in patients.
  • “Lab-tested shilajit is safe with chemotherapy.” Contaminant testing and medicine-interaction testing answer different questions.

Frequently asked questions

Can shilajit cure cancer?

No. There is no human clinical evidence that shilajit cures cancer.

Does fulvic acid kill cancer cells?

Some laboratory studies have tested whole shilajit or related preparations on cancer cells. Those results do not establish that orally consumed fulvic acid treats a tumour in a person.

Can shilajit shrink tumours?

No human study has shown that shilajit shrinks tumours. Cell-growth results cannot be used as evidence of tumour shrinkage in patients.

Can shilajit reduce cancer fatigue?

No clinical trial has established shilajit as a treatment for cancer-related fatigue. Fatigue can come from the cancer itself, anaemia, treatment, pain, sleep disruption, nutrition or other causes, so it deserves proper clinical assessment. See the NCI guidance on cancer fatigue.

Is purified or tested shilajit safe during cancer treatment?

Quality testing can answer specific questions about the tested sample. It does not establish compatibility with chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, prescription medicines or surgery.

The bottom line

Shilajit and cancer research is preclinical. Scientists have observed effects in cells and one animal cancer model, but no human trial has shown that shilajit prevents cancer, treats it, relieves its symptoms or improves treatment outcomes.

That is the line between an interesting research lead and a clinically supported claim.
